Pada masa itu, beliau sedang menjalankan kerja penyelidikan mengenai gas cecair. Untuk mencairkan gas pada suhu rendah, dia terlebih dahulu perlu mereka bentuk bekas yang boleh melindungi gas dari suhu luar. Jadi dia meminta Berg, seorang juruteknik kaca, untuk meniup bekas kaca dua lapis untuknya.
