Step 5: Create a sampling and acceptance plan
ISO 2859-1:2026 defines acceptance sampling plans indexed by the acceptance quality limit for lot-by-lot inspection. It helps organisations select sample sizes and acceptance or rejection thresholds for attribute inspection. The buyer and supplier still need to agree on the inspection level, defect classes and applicable AQL values.
A practical defect catalogue normally separates:
- Critical defects: conditions that may create a safety, legal or serious usability risk;
- Major defects: failures likely to cause returns, functional problems or material deviation from the approved specification;

For packaging, ASTM D5276 describes a free-fall method for evaluating how loaded containers withstand drop impact and how the package protects its contents. The exact distribution test should match the package weight, shipping method and market risk rather than being selected only because it is familiar.
Step 8: Verify packaging and shipment information
Confirm unit quantity, accessories, manuals, labels, barcode data, country-of-origin marks, carton quantity, carton dimensions and shipping marks. Scan production barcodes instead of checking only their appearance. Compare carton measurements with the logistics quotation because a packaging change can alter freight cost and pallet utilisation.
For retail or e-commerce programmes, inspect the customer-facing pack and the transport carton as separate systems. A beautiful gift box can still fail if it moves freely inside a weak master carton.
